Print Prelim and Evaluation

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop, or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • In comparison to professional products my product is not to the same standard. The masthead is small and less exuberant than professional products such as 'Vogue' or 'Heat' magazines. Though there is a colour scheme it is also quite plain.
  • The photography is also amateur like compared to professional pieces because the text overlaps the subject. However, I think the pose of the subject is like that of professional pieces because the poses are usually confident and strong.
  • The lighting used with the photography could also be compared to professional photography because sometimes they also have dark shadows on the subjects face.
2 & 3. Who would be the target audience for your media product and how would you attract/ address your audience?
  • The audience for my media product would be for college student roughly 17-19 due to the product being a college magazine. The articles are also meant to be of interest and use to them.
  • I used purple and yellow font colouring for the text because the college colours were purple and gold, which the target audience can relate to. The language of the text, I think, is similar to that of professional products, which would appeal to the target audience because college students wish to be treated like adults.
  • The photography would attract the audience because the subject is of similar age as the target audience and the costume is everyday, trendy clothing that most students would wear.
  • Also the content would appeal to target audience because the articles and competitions and information revolve around them.
4. What have you learned about technologies from the process of  constructing this product?
  • I have learned how to use Photoshop to create a product efficiently. It also helped to make my product more eye catching and modern.
  • The flash kit used while doing the photography was something new to me and it helped me understand the way thing were done professionally. However, we used a black back drop as opposed to a white one, which most professionals would use, along with a SLR camera.
  • The Apple Macs that we used were difficult to get used to but became easier as I spent more time on it while creating my media product.
  • I also used blogspot.com for the first time which was confusing to start with but became much easier to use.

Front Cover Flat Plan

For the front cover I decided to use purple and gold for most of the text because these are the colours used by the college so that students would recognise them. I also tried to add topics that would be relevant to students and make it interesting for them to read. The portrait style face in the top right of the cover was to match with the portrait competition to give students something to interest them in the competition.

Print Prelim Introduction

Preliminary Exercise: Using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring the photograph of a student in a medium close up plus some appropriately laid-out text and masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate your grasp of DTP.
