Image Analysis and Composition

  • The image is a long shot
  • Slightly high angle.
  • The mise-en-scene of the shot suggests an isolated, neglected location through the dark lighting of the scene depicted.
  • The dead tree is to the left of the frame and at the forefront of the shot, drawing the viewers attention.
  • The gray clouds create a gloomy atmosphere.
  • The depth of the shot and how the image goes on and on, suggest a deep sense of isolation. Feels forgotten.
  • The far away sunlight beaming on far away places deepens the feeling of neglect.
  • The desolate wasteland location suggests that the genre of the film could be horror.
  • This shot could be used as the establishing shot at the beginning of the film or scene.

  •  Medium Close up shot of character
  • High angle shot - audience looking down on character - creates a sense of vulnerability about the character. Creates synthetic personalization.
  • Eye line is in the middle thrid of frame - giving the character a less dominant air and also gives the audience power over the character - creates sympathy.
  • Character is in the left of frame - audiences attention immediately drawn to the left of the frame.
  • The body language of the character is hunched, inward looking - which suggests, again, the vulnerability of the character and the impression that they have given up or are troubled.
  • The facial expression appears to be lacking giving the impression that she has lost feeling or is troubled.
  • The white costume suggests purity or kindness, but the red looking eyes create a contrast and the impression of lost purity, hate and anger. It suggests to an audience that the character is troubled or lost and creates a feeling of sympathy from the audience.
  • The broken, fragmented mirror suggests the characters disgust with themselves, that they hate what they are. It also suggests that the character herself is broken and fragmented.
  • The gray brick wall reflected in the mirror could mean that the character has a brick wall around them, isolating them from others and the audience. The brick wall could resemble her cold feelings and appearance - suggests to audience that she has cut herself off from not only her feelings but all other characters and the audience.
  • Also, the mirror taking up half of the frame creates a closed frame around the character representing entrapment, isolation and fragility - which is also shown through the broken pieces of the mirror.
  • These aspects and representations of the film suggests that the genre of the film could be a dark drama or thriller.
These images have influenced my ideas, costume, lighting, and framing of shots and characters. From the images I have deconstructed, I have decided that dark lighting would go well with the genre of my product (Vamp-horror), this is because the lighting creates atmosphere within the shots, especially close-ups or location shots. The images have also shown me that closed framing can be effective in creating certain moods or feelings of entrapment and isolation which would be perfect for my product. For my ideas, the images have influence how I see locations and how to frame them within a shot.
