Shooting Schedule

Here are the updated shooting schedules from the actual shooting.

Mood Board of Inspirational Images

These images are inspirational for me because they use locations that I find suitable for my product and I have tried to replicate them in my moving image production. Such as a dark forest. Also the dark mise-en-scene of the images has influenced my mise-en-scene decision and how to position characters and compose my shots. They also belong to the same genre of film that I am doing, so they have helped influence my narrative decisions and the way in which I will use different shots angles, costumes and make-up.

Image Analysis and Composition

  • The image is a long shot
  • Slightly high angle.
  • The mise-en-scene of the shot suggests an isolated, neglected location through the dark lighting of the scene depicted.
  • The dead tree is to the left of the frame and at the forefront of the shot, drawing the viewers attention.
  • The gray clouds create a gloomy atmosphere.
  • The depth of the shot and how the image goes on and on, suggest a deep sense of isolation. Feels forgotten.
  • The far away sunlight beaming on far away places deepens the feeling of neglect.
  • The desolate wasteland location suggests that the genre of the film could be horror.
  • This shot could be used as the establishing shot at the beginning of the film or scene.

  •  Medium Close up shot of character
  • High angle shot - audience looking down on character - creates a sense of vulnerability about the character. Creates synthetic personalization.
  • Eye line is in the middle thrid of frame - giving the character a less dominant air and also gives the audience power over the character - creates sympathy.
  • Character is in the left of frame - audiences attention immediately drawn to the left of the frame.
  • The body language of the character is hunched, inward looking - which suggests, again, the vulnerability of the character and the impression that they have given up or are troubled.
  • The facial expression appears to be lacking giving the impression that she has lost feeling or is troubled.
  • The white costume suggests purity or kindness, but the red looking eyes create a contrast and the impression of lost purity, hate and anger. It suggests to an audience that the character is troubled or lost and creates a feeling of sympathy from the audience.
  • The broken, fragmented mirror suggests the characters disgust with themselves, that they hate what they are. It also suggests that the character herself is broken and fragmented.
  • The gray brick wall reflected in the mirror could mean that the character has a brick wall around them, isolating them from others and the audience. The brick wall could resemble her cold feelings and appearance - suggests to audience that she has cut herself off from not only her feelings but all other characters and the audience.
  • Also, the mirror taking up half of the frame creates a closed frame around the character representing entrapment, isolation and fragility - which is also shown through the broken pieces of the mirror.
  • These aspects and representations of the film suggests that the genre of the film could be a dark drama or thriller.
 These images have influenced my ideas, costume, lighting, and framing of shots and characters. From the images I have deconstructed, I have decided that dark lighting would go well with the genre of my product (Vamp-horror), this is because the lighting creates atmosphere within the shots, especially close-ups or location shots. The images have also shown me that closed framing can be effective in creating certain moods or feelings of entrapment and isolation which would be perfect for my product. For my ideas, the images have influence how I see locations and how to frame them within a shot.

Peer Evaluation and Improvements

During a lesson I showed and explained my Storyboard to a group of peers who are also doing a Moving Image production. They then gave me feedback on my work and told me both positive aspect and apsects i could change and improve.
They said:
  • The genre of the product is clear through the mise-en-scene, lighting and sound indicated on the storyboard.
  • The events and mise-en-scene are typical of the genre.
  • The editing is clear and the paces change appropriately.
  • There are a wide variety of shots, angles and distances.
  • There are appropriate camera movements.
  • They also commented how the storyboard is appropriate for the target audience.
What they said I could improve on;
  • Add logo's and credits to my storyboard as they have been missed out.
  • Use a filter while filming to create a dark effect.

Research into Potential Target Audience - Primary

The opening I questioned an audience on was Higanjima: Escape from Vampire Island

00.00.00 - 00.02.05

The questions that i asked an audience were;
  • What genre do you think the film opening belongs to?
  • Why do you think this?
  • What do you thin the certificate of the film should be from what you have seen?
  • Is the film opening interesting for you as an audience?
  • Do you understand the narrative so far?
  • Is the editing smooth, does the pace match the action in the sequence?
  • What changes would you give the film opening?

Some of the answers I received were;
  • The genre is horror
  • This is evident through the dark mise-en-scene, sound and camera movements
  • It is probably rated 18 because of gory, mature content
  • The opening interests audience because it bring the audience straight into the action and they get swept away with the character
  • The narrative is obvious and easy to follow and give indication that it is a horror narrative
  • The editing is smooth and it follow the action and emphasizes it
  • Make it a little brighter so that the character and location can be seen more easily, make the acting more realistic
From what I have decided from the feedback given is that my film opening should be of a content for mature audiences, it should be intriguing and dark (mise-en-scene, lighting) and macro aspect should match the horror genre of the product. It should also be clear who is in the scene and what is happening in the scene. Also, the sequence should be more realistic to draw in the audience.

Research into Potential Target Audience - Secondary

The target audience for my genre of film opening is obviously going to echo the results of my research. They will be a mostly male audience, though there will be some female audiences, aged between 16-34. The reason why I am targeting this group of people is because they have the most interest in my genre and it will be easier for them to understand the narrative.
